ABOUT PROJECT 1919
The mission of Project 1919: GCCC's Magazine of the Arts is to provide a creative outlet for Garden City Community College students and employees as well as the community at large. Project 1919 seeks to showcase the hard work and creativity of both GCCC students and employees while placing that work within conversation with creative works from the community. Project 1919 seeks to provide students who work on the magazine practical and hands-on teaching in publishing, design, and editing skills.
We are part of the Bookbusters club sponsored by the English department. This is a student run magazine wherein decisions about layout, design, editing, and acceptances are made by students working on the magazine with guidance from faculty. The magazine itself is a physical book printed right here on GCCC's campus and distributed at the end of the Spring semester. The magazine was named by the Bookbusters in Fall 2021 based on a suggestion by Mr. Turpin. "Project" was chosen because it relates to the educational goals of the magazine for students while also implying forward thinking and future progress. "1919" was selected as it represents the year GCCC was founded and connects the magazine to the college's past.
The deadline to submit is March 13, 2026.

WRITING AND COVER ART CONTEST
Please follow the General Submissions Guidelines below to submit to the Writing and Cover Art Contest. Make sure to check the field that says "Contest Entry" in the submission form below. You may submit work for the contest in multiple categories and multiple works to one category, but please make it clear to which category each work belongs. By submitting to the Writing and Cover Art Contest, you are also giving Bookbusters and the Project 1919 staff permission to consider your work for publication in the magazine even if you do not win the contest. A winner and a runner-up will be selected for each of the four categories (fiction, poetry, essay, and art). Prizes will be announced at a later date. The winner of the Cover Art Contest will have their art used as the cover for the next edition of Project 1919: GCCC's Magazine of the Arts.
GENERAL SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES
Submissions to Project 1919 are open to any current or former GCCC student and/or employee, any student currently enrolled in a community college in Kansas, and community members with ties to the Garden City, KS area. There are four submission categories: fiction, poetry, essay, and art. Please see below for an example bio. Please do NOT include your name anywhere in the submitted file or in the file name. All works are judged for acceptance anonymously. Please follow the guidelines below for each category by clicking on the category name. You may submit work to multiple categories and multiple works to one category, but please use the Notes section of the form to make it clear to which category each work belongs.
Sample Bio:
Seth Kristalyn has an MA in English from Kansas State University. He has previously published work in The Write Launch, Rappahannock Review, and NUNUM among others. His work has been nominated for The Pushcart Prize, and he is Faculty Editor of Project 1919: GCCC’s Magazine of the Arts. He spends way too much time thinking about Dungeons & Dragons. He teaches English courses and lives in southwestern Kansas with his wife, two daughters, and dog (Thorin Barkenshield, King Under the Table).

Project 1919 reserves the right to reject any work for publication. Because we have limited space,
we may not be able to publish all works that are submitted to us. We also reserve
the right to remove an accepted work from the magazine prior to publication if circumstances
require it. Works accepted for publication may be slightly edited to follow standard
grammar and mechanics usage. You will only be notified if edits that relate to content
are necessary. It is understood that all works belong to their respective creators
and the creator retains all rights to their work.
